Welcome back from Spring break and Easter long weekend! I hope everyone had a splendid time off and is well rested with gorgeous weather starting to appear outside! I want to quickly apologize as I have been terrible at updating the blogs and giving you reading material about what is happening around the classroom!
Term 2 was an extra busy time of the year, there was so much happening around the school and many events division 4 was a part of! Here are some things we did in term 2.
Winter Olympics
We had a tremendous time with Winter Olympics this year! An event that only takes place once every 4 years! Students in division 4 participated in our opening and closing ceremonies, Curling event, Alpine Skiing, Cross-Country Skiing, Biathlon, and the grade 7s also got to do Bobsledding this year!
Winter Olympics was a fun event for everyone as they competed in their house teams to collect gold, silver, bronze, and copper medals. Look below for our final medal count!

Hip Hop
At the conclusion of Winter Olympics last term, the school also participated in Hip Hop lessons! Division 4 alongside Division 3 performed a choreography to the song "I Wish" by Skee-Lo. Students did a fabulous job with learning the choreography and for most, stepping outside of their comfort zone to perform a great routine! Not to be bias, but...I think Division 4 had the best performance 😉.

Academics

In the classroom, we had a busy term of learning. In Language Arts, we started and completed our novel study of the book 'Hatchet' by Gary Paulsen - a classic that maybe some parents also read when they were kids!
Throughout the novel, we dove into the character of Brian and how he changed and developed over the course of the book. We also explored what happened to him throughout the book with Diary Entries, and also visualized what the setting would look like using text clues. We finished off the novel with our project "Book in a Bag" where students re-made their iteration of the book!
Term 3 Language Arts will be more writing focused. Students have started Spring Break presentation - which will focus on public speaking. However, as we move along in term 3, we will be writing persuasive essays and focusing attention on proper paragraph and essay writing structures.
---
In math - we continued to truck along with our units. Term 2 saw most of the focus on using a protractor to identify and measure angles. We also used concepts and ideas to find missing angles on a line, in a triangle, and in a quadrilateral.
We finished off term 2 by starting chapter 5 - a unit on fractions (improper and mixed number fractions). Chapter 5 test is this Friday!
---
Science in term 2 was about body systems, and we dove deep into one specific body system - the Excretory System. We learned about how we get rid of waste in our body through the excretory system - which works alongside the urinary system, the lungs, and the skin. All of which to help our body get rid of waste in our body.
Term 3 will be all about Physics - specifically Newton's 3 Laws of Motion.

Wow, and here we are in term 3 already! This year has flown by already and we are already approaching the middle of April!
I want to take this opportunity and continue to express my gratitude to all parents/guardians for your continued support of these students' learning. Division 4 has been a joy to be with so far, and we have done some amazing learning in class, all with your help and encouragement. I understand how much goes into keeping these students on task and on schedule with their school work. On top of that, balancing it with any extra-curricular activities they may have.
Lastly, I want to continue to encourage students/parents to come talk to me if they have any questions regarding assignments, homework, or projects. I deeply appreciate the responsibility of those students that ask questions or contact me if they have questions, as it shows that they are taking ownership of their own learning, an important thing to have in grade 5 and 6.
